Hyundai Recalls 85043 Sonatas Over Fuel Tank Issue That Causes It to Melt

Hyundai recalls 85,043 Sonatas with the problem of gas tanks being able to melt, increasing the risk of fire. The issue stems from Sonatas that are equipped with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder non-hybrid engine, probably from the 2020 to 2023 years.

According to the document from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an issue is brought about by a purge control check valve that allows compressed air to backflow from the turbocharger to the fuel tank, and when plenty of air gets in, it can cause the tank to deform, potentially expand, and come into contact with the hot exhaust tank.

The end can lead to melting, increasing the chances or risk of fire from leaked fuel. There are several indicators highlighted in the recall document that owners need to note:

  • pop-up noise from the back end of the car.
  • malfunctioning indicator lights appear illuminated at the dash.
  • Smell of fuel gases around the car.
  • At times vehicles may not start.

From the recall, Hyundai has received about seven fuel tank-related cases specifically in the United States and in Canada. No crashes or injuries or deaths reported connected to the recall.

Owners who are affected by the recall will be notified and instructed to take their cars to the nearest dealership for inspection, and if possible, a prescribed remedy will be performed by technicians. The remedy will include repairing the fuel tank and the closest components and updating the ECU software.

A reimbursement will be provided by Hyundai for the affected owners who had the same service performed before they filled the recall. Hyundai is planning to notify both owners and dealers of the recall and remedy by mail starting next year on January 16.
